Baby Sensory Exploration Yellow Ducks

Rubber Ducky you’re the one, to make COLOR DAYS lots of fun! Yellow Day is my third of the color exploration days and there are lots of new ideas here waiting for you! We did these activities when Peanut was 9 months old but I strongly believe that babies can do supported activities at any age, they will just explore with their current developmental abilities!

On other color exploration days, I filled the basket with objects from around the house that Peanut had never an opportunity to interact with before. For Yellow Day, I took a different approach! I used ONLY Peanut’s toys to fill the exploration bin.

At this time, Peanut was 9 months old and was transitioning in how he played with his toys. He started to play with parts of his toys, with a new purpose rather than the toy’s intention. My hope with this bin was that he could explore lots of parts of toys as an individual toy itself!

What I included in our yellow basket:

While gathering Peanut’s yellow toys, I noticed he has A LOT of rubber duck. This is probably because our gender reveal was rubber duck themed 🙂 Anyway, I got ducks on the brain and ran with the idea! Keep reading to see our water activity!!

Water Exploration

Peanut has been in water and played with water, but always in the bathtub! I have noticed over time how his interactions with toys in the water have changed as he explores. My objective of this activity was to give him a different perspective on water!

What I Set Up

This water exploration was in our master bathroom tub (figured it would minimize the cleanup!) I filled a rimmed baking sheet with water and put rubber duckies in it. I also put a few large bowls of water with ducks in them. I put a yellow towel down between the baking sheet and two bowls for Peanut to sit on. He got all ready for this activity in his ducky robe!

How Peanut Played

  • splashed on the baking sheet and watched the ripples
  • patted the water on the baking sheet to move the ducks
  • picked up and put down the ducks to make a splash
  • sat on the baking sheet and kicked the water
  • dropped toys in the bowls
  • took items out of the bowls

LESSONS I LEARNED DURING Yellow DAY

  • It was AMAZING that everything in this exploration bin Peanut could chew on because it was his toys! This really minimized my need to interject and redirect what we wanted to do.
  • He was only entertained by the basket for about 20- 30 minutes because although he enjoyed the items separated from the rest of the toy, they were all things he had seen before.
  • HE LOVED PLAYING IN THE WATER!
  • Peanut tried to move one of the bowls of water and spilled it (of course) BUT the water soaked towel he was sitting on became his favorite activity of the day! He kept hitting the towel and crawling around it. He absolutely loved the sound it made and the squishy feeling.
  • He enjoyed the water activity for about 45 minutes.
  • This was Peanut’s first interaction with the Cabbage Patch doll, we had it for a while but I wasn’t sure what he would do with it. He loves that doll!! He kept giving it kisses and looking at it so carefully, it was so sweet.

I hope that you have fun doing these activities! Tag me on instagram so I can see your little ones exploring!
