Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun
Books can be so magical! Open a book, open a heart! The first time I read Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun book with my class, I fell in love with the story. One of my students made a deep lasting connection. I noticed during SSR he was taking this book to read, EVERYDAY. So I decided to meet with him to ask him to talk to me about the book and what he thinks of it. His heart poured open with reflections on how he is like the main character because other kids make fun of him. He told me that every time he read the book, it inspired more and more courage in him to be proud of his differences.
I used this book to teach inferencing and infused meaningful social emotional lessons throughout! I hope that sharing this book with your students can help to inspire courage in your students to celebrate their differences. You take the lead! What makes you different?! Tell the students about that and how it makes you feel. These activities have several opportunities for you to do this together with your class.
