How To Accelerate Your Fiction Reading Activities

· · · ·

When planning fiction reading activities for my 2nd grade students, I want everything to connect! It is annoying when wording about reading strategies are different and it confuses students.

I designed the Comprehension Crew to be a cohesive framework for teaching and practicing reading strategies. In addition, it makes learning reading skill fun and engaging!

Fiction Reading Activities in the Comprehension Crew

Characters

Each fiction reading strategy has a character that represents its meaning through their career and catch phrase. There are several visual aid options so your students can see the characters as they are using the skill.

Each character and reading skill has a concrete object associated with it to deepen the understanding of the strategy.

For example, Izzy the Inferencer uses a magnifying glass to look for clues and make inferences. The magnifying glass and his sentence frame is used throughout the activities.

Task Cards

It is really helpful to use fiction reading activities that use pictures and text. I love how photographs empower my students will reading challenges to feel confident using a reading strategy. This is a great way to scaffold student practice.

A set of photograph and short text task cards comes with each character. However, you can use them for ANY skill! I love pulling the inference photographs out a few months later and asking my students to summarize. Even if they remember seeing the photograph they will enjoy using it again in a different way.

Practice Passages

Of course we always need good old fashioned worksheet passages to practice reading skills. These passages are perfect to check student progress and understanding.

There are a variety of differentiated options included to support students’ learning needs.
