My baby would NEVER… well he did.

I feel like it is a known thing that moms make declarations that their baby will NEVER do this or that and then we all have them moment of shock when they actually DO do that. My first of these experiences came when I said that my baby will never throw his food off of his high chair! Well guess what, he does as I am sure many babies do. I want to share with you what we do as a response, you know once the initial shock wore off. My first step was to figure out WHY is this happening!

Dropping Food off the High Chair

So I figured that Peanut must be trying to communicate something with me with this new behavior. The first thing I realized was that he would pick up his food and drop it to the ground when he wasn’t hungry. Not the way I wish he could tell me, but it actually makes sense! Also at 8 months old, Peanut developed an opinion on which food he wanted to eat. I mean it happens to all of us eventually! He started to eat some of the food on his plate, but dropping each piece of a specific food on the floor.

What We Do

When he drops the food we say “No thank you” and pick the food up. We got the idea of saying no thank you whenever Peanut does something wrong from our friends who are the absolute definition of mid-west niceness. If he continues, we move the plate away for a little or stop food time if he is clearly not hungry. Sometimes we give him a puree first to see if he wants that. Also, if he laughs when he drops it, we look away because he is trying to get a reaction. Then if he eats correctly, we praise like the bite was the MOST AMAZING THING IN THE WORLD!

Thankfully this doesn’t happen too often, but I feel like it is just the first of many statements I will make about something Peanut will never do, until he does…. Motherhood is never boring!!
